In a move that shows just how easy it will be for consumers to justify dumping the expense of car ownership, wireless carrier Verizon has taken a massive first step toward peer-to-peer car usership via a mobile application. No, it’s not all quite there yet (and the monetization attempts look clumsy) but the intention is clear: We are on a path, particularly with people under 30, toward lower vehicle purchases and multiple ownership.
Is this one of the unintended consequences of mobile connected technology? Think about how the autonomous vehicle will drive the movement away from singular car ownership, as it can drive itself from owner to owner, and location to location. Yes, that is a long way from a simple mobile app offered by Verizon but evolution is incremental, right?
